Setup a FileZilla Server

Installing a FileZiLLa server is very simple.

  1. Download the installer executable. Currently it is available here:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558
  2. Run the installer executable. Most of this process is automated.
  3. When asked to choose components, choose FileZilla Server (Service), Administration interface, Start Menu Shortcuts, and Desktop Icon.
  4. When asked to select startup behavior for FileZilla server, the default is probably the best choice. Your options are as follows:
    • Install as a service, started with Windows (default)
This option will do exactly what it sounds like; the service will start automatically and you do not have to login to start it.
    • Install as service, started manually
This option will install the server so that it can run without a user being logged in, but you will still need to login initially to start the server. This is good if you don't want the service running all the time but don't want to have to be at the computer to keep it running.
    • Do not install as service, start server automatically (not recommended)
This option will install the server as a program so that you have to open the executable to be able to FTP in. When your user's session closes, so will the FTP server.

  5. You can choose any port you want for the admin interface; this is just what the program that allows you to change settings will connect to. If you change it from the default of 14147, make sure you remember what you chose.
  6. The next choice is how the server interface should be started. My preference is "Start manually," as I find it annoying for the configuration for FileZiLLa to pop up every time I login. You can choose whatever seems appropriate, as the options are fairly self-explanatory.
